Nocturia in Men: Why You Wake Up to Urinate
Nocturia means waking during sleep to urinate. BPH is one possible contributor, but nighttime urination has multiple potential causes.
BPH connection
NIDDK includes nocturia among common BPH symptoms. That does not mean every case of nocturia comes from the prostate.
Low-risk steps to discuss
For men with mild BPH symptoms, NIDDK suggests drinking fewer liquids before bed and limiting alcohol and caffeine. Medication timing may also matter and should be discussed with the prescribing clinician.
When to seek evaluation
Persistent nocturia that disrupts sleep, occurs with weak stream or incomplete emptying, or appears with pain, blood or fever deserves medical attention.
