Ashwagandha for Men's Health: Benefits, Limits & Safety
Ashwagandha has some evidence for stress and insomnia, but that does not establish it as a treatment for prostate enlargement.
Where evidence is stronger
NCCIH says some ashwagandha preparations may help insomnia and stress, while evidence for many other conditions remains insufficient or unclear.
Important safety cautions
NCCIH reports possible drowsiness and gastrointestinal effects, rare reports of liver injury, and potential interactions with medicines for diabetes, blood pressure, immune suppression, seizures, thyroid conditions and sedation.
Prostate-specific caution
NCCIH specifically says people with hormone-sensitive prostate cancer should avoid ashwagandha because it may increase testosterone. That is a clear example of why supplement decisions belong in the context of personal medical history.
