Saw Palmetto for BPH: Mixed Evidence Explained
Saw palmetto is one of the best-known prostate-supplement ingredients, but the evidence is not consistently positive.
What NCCIH reports
NCCIH notes that several smaller studies suggested modest benefit, while other studies and reviews found saw palmetto no more effective than placebo for urinary symptoms related to BPH.
Why product form matters
Different extracts can have different chemical profiles. A label that simply says 'saw palmetto' does not prove equivalence to a preparation used in a study.
How to shop around the uncertainty
Look for transparent dosing, standardized extract information when relevant, third-party quality information and restrained claims. Do not let the presence of saw palmetto substitute for evaluation of significant symptoms.
